Infection Prevention and Control

Reducing the number of Healthcare Associated Infections, including MRSA and Clostridium difficile is one of the Trust's top priorities.

As a hospital we are committed to reducing our infection rates and working hard to maintain and improve our standards of clinical practice inline with national and local guidelines. We are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to ensure the best care is delivered to our patients.

Here at University Hospital, we are well aware of the benefits of working in partnership with other organisations in the local area, and we have therefore established a strong working relationship with Keele University.

A module aimed at qualified nurses of all levels who have an interest in Infection Control, (amounting to 15 credits), is therefore available at Keele University. The module is studied over a period of three months, and the training is delivered by staff who have experience in the relevant field. The module can be taken as a stand alone module, or it can be counted towards a degree.

The Trust's Director for the Prevention and Control of Infection Control at Board level is Elizabeth Rix, and our Infection Control Team is lead on a day to day basis by Helen Jenkinson, Deputy Director of Infection Prevention and Control.

The Trust's Infection Prevention and Control Team is responsible for the ongoing development of our Infection Control Programme. The team monitors infection rates in our hospitals and works closely with staff providing both education and training around infection control.

The Trust has policies and guidelines in place to help ensure that Infection Control practices are delivered on a consistent basis. The Infection Control team is available for expert advice to all staff on the management of patients with known or suspected communicable infections and any other infection control issues.
