Hospital Gets a Little Help from its Friends

Research into gynaecologic cancer received a boost after Pat Martin and Friends donated 8,000 pounds to University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

Pat has been raising money since 1992 and in that time her group of fundraisers have donated an incredible 80,000 pounds.

Mr Charles Redman, consultant gynaecological oncologist, believes research will help future cancer sufferers.

He said:

"Quite a lot of this money has gone into either research or buying equipment that will benefit patients. Together with donations from the hospital's Cancer Research Fund the 8,000 pounds received today will really help our research. Over the years we have had at least three research fellows who have been supported by the money Pat has raised. This research in turn can generate bigger grants so Pat's donation really does get the ball rolling. The people of North Staffordshire will hopefully benefit from better treatments in the future and donations really speed up that process."

Steve Rushton, charitable fund manager, said Pat's small group of volunteers can be rightly proud of their achievements.

He said:

"People like Pat Martin, Arthur Moult and Hilary and Alan Scragg have done wonders for University Hospital over the years. It is the dedication of people like these that not only improve the hospital, but also make it centre of the community. I'd like to express my gratitude to them all for their efforts and I hope they have many more years of fundraising ahead of them."
