Top Awards for Top Staff

University Hospital celebrated their Staff Awards 2009 last week with a special ceremony at Keele Hall.

Over 250 doctors, nurses, administrative staff, support staff and many more professions came together to applaud some of the outstanding work done to help patients.   In total eight awards were given out to individuals or teams that had gone the extra mile to improve the care the people of North Staffordshire receive at their hospital.

Julia Bridgewater, Chief Executive, said:

"Our staff are some of the most dedicated people you will ever meet, they work incredibly hard for the people of North Staffordshire and the surrounding areas. I'm delighted we were able to come together and pick out just a handful of the many teams and individuals that make University Hospital a great place. I'm very proud of the winners, everyone who was nominated for an award is a winner. However, I feel the real winners are the patients that come to the hospital, I'm sure the people of North Staffordshire will no doubt share my pride in those who dedicate their lives to working at University Hospital."

Bob Eccles, the Trust's bereavement officer, scooped the Employee of the Year Award for his outstanding commitment to his job.

Julia Bridgewater said:

"Although working within University Hospital is very much a team effort, Bob has consistently gone the extra mile in supporting our staff and our patients. His role is one of the more difficult roles within the Trust and he is a true credit to University Hospital. Patients also benefit from the work of 80 volunteers, and it was only right that we had an award for them. A volunteer is someone who offers to work of their own free will without reward, they devote themselves to the task in hand. John Guy, who volunteers in Pressure Therapy won this award and you can't put a value on what he and others bring to the hospital and the support they provide to the patients."

The Breast Cancer team won the Patient Experience Award, the Productive Ward Facilitation Team won the Improving Working Life Environment Award, the Maternity Theatre team won the Service Improvement/Transformation Award, the clinical coding team won the Non-Clinical Award and The Colorectal and Respiratory Same Day Next Day Service team's share the Clinical Innovation Award.   Lamont Howie, of BBC radio Stoke, was the MC for the evening and ensured the awards ceremony hit just the right note alongside St John Fisher Catholic College orchestra providing additional entertainment. The Awards ceremony took place on Friday 11 September.
