Professor Andrew Garner re-appointed to UHNS Board
University Hospital is delighted to announce the re-appointment of Professor Andrew Garner as non-executive director to its Board. Prof Andy Garner has held senior positions in academia, the NHS and the pharmaceutical industry. In his second appointment with University Hospital, Prof Garner will serve from 16 November 2010 to 15 March 2011.
Prof Garner trained in physiology and pharmacology followed by postdoctoral fellowships in Leicester and Uppsala supported by SERC, the Royal Society and Swedish MRC. He was Head of GI Research and Company Senior Scientist at ICI (now AstraZeneca) and has also held appointments at medical schools in the USA and UAE. In 1998 he became R&D director at Hope Hospital before expanding his portfolio as executive director of academic affairs with the Trust. In 2003 he was appointed Head of the Medical School at Manchester University before moving to Keele University as Dean of the Faculty of Health in 2006. Andy joined the Board of UHNS as a non-executive director at the beginning of 2007.
John MacDonald, interim chairman, is delighted that Andy has been re-appointed. He said: "Andy has brought a wealth of knowledge to our Board. His background in research has been invaluable and he has had a particular impact building links with Keele University. I am sure he will continue to provide expert advice and support in his role as a non-executive director."
Prof Garner's re-appointment has been made by the Appointments Commission in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice. He will receive a remuneration of 6,096 pounds which is the current rate of remuneration for acute trust non-executive directors. Prof Garner is the university's nominated non-executive.
All non-executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Prof Andy Garner has declared no political activity in the last five years and does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
University Hospital of North Staffordshire is the largest hospital in the area. It provides a wide range of acute clinical services for a population of half a million in Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, the Staffordshire Moorlands and surrounding areas, and specialist care for a population of around three million in an area covering Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire and Wales.
