Trust Nominated for Prestigious Award
University Hospital has been nominated for a prestigious national award. The nomination for the British Medical Journals' Corporate Social Responsibility Award is in recognition of staff efforts get the unemployed into work. The Trust has given over 1,000 people careers advice and 55 of them have gone on to full employment with the Trust.
Ian Carruthers, the Trust's education and training manager, explains why the nomination is so deserved. He said: "Many of the people who the Trust have helped will have been unemployed for some time. We helped people using one-to-one sessions, open days and workshops in the hope it will help them gain employment in the future. Not only has the Trust employed 55 people in this time, we have found over 140 work experience placements for others. In the current economic climate it is essential the hospital supports the local community and I hope we can help many more in the future."
Ian believes the hospital is just one part of the wider community working together to help the people of North Staffordshire. He said: "Partnerships with organisations like Jobcentre Plus, Start-Up Citywide, schools, colleges and universities are the key to success. We run a careers awareness day for the Job Centre and the Trust works closely with charities such as The Richmond Trust and Landau, whose clients have learning disabilities or mental impairments."
"It's also vital that young people are given opportunities so we lead the Young Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care, for 14-19 year olds, combining GCSEs, BTECs and work placements. I think our Academy is an excellent example of how a hospital can work closely with its diverse local community."
