Chairman appointed to University Hospital

University Hospital is delighted to announce the appointment of John MacDonald as substantive Chairman of the Trust. John's term of office will run from 4 August 2011 to 3 August 2015. He has previously held the post of Interim Chairman since November 2010.

John MacDonald comes to University Hospital with twenty years experience of the NHS, including fifteen years managing large acute and teaching hospitals. Most recently, John has been involved in a number of reviews of NHS services and has provided advice and support to the boards of a number of strategic health authorities and primary care trusts. He has seven years experience in chair and non-executive roles.

John said: "I am delighted to have been appointed as substantive Chairman and to continue the good work with the Board of University Hospital. The next few years are very important at University Hospital with the opening of the new hospital. I look forward to building on our achievements so far to provide the best possible services for the people of North Staffordshire and beyond."

John's appointment has been made by the Appointments Commission in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice. He will receive a remuneration of 36,500 pounds.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. John MacDonald has declared no political activity in the last five years and does not hold any other ministerial appointments.

University Hospital of North Staffordshire is the largest hospital in the area. It provides a wide range of acute clinical services for a population of half a million in Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, the Staffordshire Moorlands and surrounding areas, and specialist care for a population of around three million in an area covering Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire and Wales.
