Trent & Lyme Buildings

Some of the buildings on the City General site are fabulous old buildings, like the Skills Academy. These are Grade II listed buildings and will obviously be kept. Others, like the Norton Unit and Springfield Unit, have had long histories and still provide high quality care. But these buildings now require a great deal of maintenance to allow them to deliver 21st Century care and are therefore being demolished.

But what is happening to other buildings that are only around 20-years-old, like the New Surgical and Paediatric Department (NSPD) and Hartshill Orthopaedic and Surgical Unit (HOSU). Healthcare has moved on so much in those 20 years that these wards and theatres are no comparison to the facilities in the new building. Nor does it make any financial sense to demolish buildings that are relatively new.

That is why the Trust is going to be investing heavily in NSPD and HOSU to bring the standards and facilities in those buildings up to those in the new building. In fact, Ward 117 has already undergone a 2.3 million pound conversion into an Infectious Diseases Unit that is very impressive.

However, with services moving out of these buildings and into the new hospital, their names will no longer reflect the services they provide. Therefore, the New Surgical and Paediatric Department will become the Lyme Building and the Hartshill Orthopaedic and Surgical Unit will become the Trent building, both of which have a nice flow to them.
