Meet the team

Mr Chandra Cheruvu, Consultant Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgeon, MBBS MS (Surg), FRCS (G), FRCS (London), FRCS (Gen-Surg) - Mr Cheruvu qualifying in medicine in 1984 and trained in London and Leeds. He later did a fellowship in Bariatric (Obesity) and advanced Laparoscopic surgery in Liverpool. He did further surgical fellowships in Japan and Australia before settling in at the University Hospital in Stoke on Trent, Staffs. Mr Cheruvu has a special interest in obesity and keyhole surgery and has performed over 300 laparoscopic bariatric operations.

Ms Adriana Rotundo, MD. Consultant UGI and Bariatric Surgeon - Ms Rotundo undertook her initial surgical training in Rome. During the final year of her training she moved to the UGI and Oesophagogastric Unit at Oxford University Hospital, where she became Senior Fellow in UGI and Cancer at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford. It was during this time that she began to focus on bariatric surgery, presenting her research at international conferences and securing a fellowship in bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgery at the University College of London Hospital.  Ms Rotundo was appointed Consultant UGI and Bariatric Surgeon at University Hospital of North Staffordshire in October 2012.

 

Dr. G. I. Varughese MRCP (UK); FRCPI joined the Trust in May 2008 having previously worked as a specialist registrar at UHNS as part of the Endocrinology training programme in the West Midlands. His research includes the Prothrombotic risk of Diabetes Mellitus & Hypertension in Cardiovascular Disease. He has 61 publications  indexed on PubMed out of over 70 peer reviewed publications to date. Dr Varughese is the Trust’s Endocrinology Lead and has been actively involved with the Endocrine assessments of patients attending the joint bariatric clinic since its inception.

Dr. Chhavi Srivastava MBBS, MD, FRCA - A Consultant Anaesthetist and Simulation Lead specialising in obstetric anaesthesia, anaesthesia for bariatric surgery and Upper GI surgery, Management of the difficult airway and Simulation in Medical Education. Having completed training in from the Stoke School of Anaesthesia in the West Midlands Deanery, Dr Srivastava was appointed Consultant at University Hospital in September 2007. She developed a specialist interests during training and gained further experience in anaesthesia for the obese and cancer patients during fellowship in Louisville, USA.

Dr Vijay Jeganath - Clinical Director/Consultant Anaesthetist - Vijay has been Clinical Director for the Anaesthetics, Theatres, Pain, Cardiothoracic & Critical Care Directorates at University Hospital since 2008. Vijay continues to practice as a Consultant Anaesthetist in a wide range of specialities including cardiothoracic anaesthesia and bariatric surgery and has been instrumental in the development of the bariatric surgery service at UHNS. Vijay joined the Trust in 2002 as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist having trained in the North-west, East Anglia and the West Midlands region.

Mr David Corless, Consultant General & Gastrointestinal Surgeon, BSc MD FRCS (Gen) - Mr Corless qualifying in medicine in 1985. He has been involved in bariatric or obesity surgery since 1995, whilst working in London. He runs a very busy practice for both elective and emergency cases and specialises in upper gastro-intestinal problems. He has a special interest in keyhole surgery, which forms a large part of his work. Mr Corless also has a large endoscopy practice and includes both diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Prof R N Clayton, Consultant Endocrinologist, MD, PhD, FRCP(lon) - A Consultant Endocrinologist for over 30 years, two thirds of which at University Hospital. He has an interest in pituitary disease and metabolic aspects of obesity. He has published over 250 articles in peer-reviewed journals and numerous reviews and audits of outcomes on the topic of pituitary disease and polycystic ovary syndrome, the commonest endocrinopathy in young women and being frequently accompanied by obesity. He has helped to develop the integrated service for morbid obese patients.

Dr. Nina Vass - Registered Practitioner Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist - Dr Vass qualified as a Clinical Psychologist through a series of academic, research and clinical experiences. She obtained a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Psychology in 2002, a Master of Science in Psychological Research Methods in 2007 and a Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2011. Her role at the Joint Bariatric Clinic focuses on providing a psychosocial perspective within the multi-disciplinary assessment process.  

 

Lesley Russell  Dietitian BSC. (Hons) RD. - Registered dietitian with Health Professions Council since 1982, member of the British Obesity and Metabolic society. I am currently the team leader for nutrition and dietetic services at University hospital and have been working with bariatric patients since 1996. This is mostly in an outpatient setting and supporting other dietitians within the Trust, with whom I work and undertake clinical supervision with.  

Emily Cooper, Dietitian. BSc (Hons), PG Dip Dietetics, RD - Emily has been registered with the Health Professions Council and working at University Hospital since 2003. She is a member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society. Emily has a background of dietetics in surgical patients, which has set her up well for the role of Bariatric dietitian. For the last few years, she had taken a dual role as Bariatric and surgical dietitian, and recently had the opportunity to take on the role as full time Bariatric dietitian.

Susan Dean, Consultant Secretary to Mr Cheruvu - Susan has a background in accounts management and has been working for the trust for five years. She is currently employed as an Upper GI medical secretary to Mr Cheruvu, Lead Bariatric Surgeon. Susan has been involved in the development of the joint bariatric clinic, multi-disciplinary team meetings and coordinating the patient journey in addition to providing administrative support to the bariatric team. Susan has been instrumental in developing the UHNS input in to the National Bariatric Surgery Registry in conjunction with the bariatric team.
