Bowel Cancer Screening Team

University Hospital staff are responsible for the bowel cancer screening programme throughout the whole of Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

Our bowel cancer screening team have worked with great drive and determination to raise awareness of the symptoms of bowel cancer. They also ensure patients with abnormal results are tested and cared for in the appropriate manner. The screening programme is targeted at 60-69 year olds, who are contacted via GP lists and sent home testing kits which invite them to send a faecal sample for testing. The team's hard work is beginning to pay off, with some very promising statistics emerging.

The team are also very involved in health promotion, and work closely with PCT's and the Healthy Communities Collaborative to increase awareness of the condition and link with fundraising initiatives and support groups. The team have plans to develop the programme further, and are hoping to extend the targeted age range to 70-74 year olds as well as 60-69 year olds by September 2010.  They will also be analysing why some areas have lower uptake than others.
