The infectious diseases service is based in Ward 117 at the City General Hospital. From here the team provide inpatient care for patients with all manner of community acquired infections, complications of chronic viral infections and travel related infections. The majority of patients are admitted from the hospital's emergency centre, but patients are also admitted from our outpatient services and directly from the community after referral from their GP.

Outpatient services are provided from Central Outpatients, and in conjunction with genitourinary medicine (for HIV services), respiratory medicine (for TB services) and gastroenterology (for Hepatitis C care).

The infectious diseases team also provide an inpatient referral service throughout UHNS and physicians see patients regularly in other inpatient units for advice on infection related matters.

The team are heavily involved in education of undergraduate medical and nursing students as well as postgraduate doctors.

The two infectious disease physicians are also part of the acute medical team based in the emergency care centre and the Royal Infirmary.
