About the service
The North Staffs Lymphoedema Service is run by University Hospital, with clinics held every weekday.
Referrals are accepted from any health care professional. If self referrals are received, the patients' GP will be contacted for information.
If you are referred to North Staffordshire Lymphoedema service you will undergo a thorough assessment which will ascertain the cause of swelling. A treatment plan will then be prescribed.
This will either be in the form of:
-
Maintenance Therapy, entailing skincare, exercise, Simple Lymphatic Drainage, strong compression hosiery or kinesio taping.
Or:
-
Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy, entailing manual lymphatic drainage, multilayered Lymphoedema bandaging, or sequential pneumatic compression.
Each treatment plan is individually devised and may consist of all the components of the treatment category, or maybe just one or two. Skincare and exercise are prescribed for every patient.
