Wards 110 and 111 are located at the City General Hospital and are designated to nurse children, with age ranges from between babies to 16 years old. We do care for teenagers aged up to 19 years old, if they are still in full time education and if the young person wishes to be on a children's ward. We care for children that suffer from all medical conditions, including respiratory related illnesses, for example, asthma, cystic fibrosis or infections.
Children who suffer from cancer are treated here with some of the management carried out in Birmingham Children's Hospital. Due to the very complex treatment these children receive, there is also an Oncology Day Room run by specialist nurses just off ward 110.
Children with endocrinology problems are managed on the ward, for example, diabetes. However, a great deal of their care is now handled in the community by a dedicated team of nurses.
By the very nature of some of the chronic conditions, children might have to have a long stay in hospital.
All the nurses that work on this area are qualified children's nurses, and supporting these nurses are Health Care Support Workers, all of whom are experienced care givers, with National Vocational Qualification certificates at Level II and III.
To support the children during their stay with distraction and activities to prevent boredom, we have a team of Play Specialists, and large inside and outside play areas.
We have facilities for parents, who very often wish to stay with their child during any hospital stay. Visiting times for parents is 24 hours each day, other relatives may visit from 10am to 8pm, but we are very flexible and understand that parents may be at work or caring for other siblings. There is a room where parents can make hot drinks, and eat meals. There is also a canteen on the hospital site.
We are always keen to hear the views and comments of parents and their children. The Matron runs a monthly meeting where parents are welcomed to come along and share their experiences of the ward. Staff can advise you of when the Matron meeting will take place.
Car parking is limited, but there are spaces for a 20 minute drop off just by the entrance to the Children’s wards. You may purchase a permit for long stay, which is much cheaper. This can be obtained from a member of staff.
We promote a high level of cleanliness on the wards, and ask that all patients and visitors adhere to the hand hygiene rules.
