Overview of Maternity Unit

Our Maternity Unit is split between a Midwifery Lead Unit for uncomplicated pregnancies and labours, and a Delivery Suite that provides specialist care for women with more complex labour and delivery needs.

The unit delivers around 5,900 babies per year, and we also offer a home birth service.

All women will be cared for by a midwife. A midwife is specially trained to care for mothers and babies, throughout pregnancy, labour and after the birth. (All our midwives are supervised.  Please click here for more information on what supervisors of midwives do).

On the Delivery Suite there is a Consultant Obstetrician available who is supported by a team of Specialist Registrars, Registrars and Junior Doctors, 24 hours a day.

We have 24 hour dedicated Anaesthetic cover which enables the unit to offer a 24 hour Epidural Service and anaesthesia for those women requiring a Caesarean section.
