Supervisors of Midwives
Who are they?
The role of the Supervisor of Midwives is to ensure the safety and welfare of you and your baby.
Supervisors of midwives are experienced practising midwives who have undertaken additional training. They are based either at University Hospital, within the local community or outside the NHS.
What do they do?

Aim to ensure you receive guidance and information about your care in the right place, by the right professional

Strive to set a good example to midwives and doctors

Guide and support midwives to help them develop their skills and expertise

Monitor the practice of midwives to ensure you and your baby receive good quality, safe care

Identify and take steps to improve practice if necessary
How can they help you?
Supervisors of midwives are there to:

Listen to any concerns you may have about your care

Support you and your midwife to plan the safest and most comfortable place for you to give birth

If necessary, discuss with you why your choices may not be the most appropriate for you
Help to sort out any potential disagreements about your maternity care in an unbiased and impartial manner
