Oncology

Oncology is the term given to the treatment of cancer. University Hospital provides a range of specialised treatment and support services for adult patients with cancer from North and South Staffordshire, Shropshire, South and Mid Cheshire.

The Oncology department provides treatment for patients from the new cancer centre.  Here, there is a Radiotherapy Department, Chemotherapy Unit and inpatient treatment on Ward 201.

The Haematology department, which provides both outpatient and inpatient services for people with blood disorders (usually but not always cancer) is also based on Ward 201 at the new Cancer Centre at the City General.

A new cancer centre

In 2009 the new purpose built cancer centre was opened at the City General site.

The state of the art building has 33 inpatient beds, a day unit, a radiotherapy department with an additional linear accelerator and a new brachytherapy suite.

The new cancer centre has been designed around the needs of our patients and brings together in one place a wide range of specialist cancer staff.

The Arts for Health programme has been active in raising money to provide an environment in the new cancer centre which is less impersonal and more relaxing for patients, their families and the staff who look after them.
