What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine which deals with the diseases and surgery of the visual senses, including the eye, brain, and areas surrounding the eye, such as the eyelids.

Ophthalmology at University Hospital

The Ophthalmology department at University Hospital has seven Consultant Ophthalmologists, and the eye service is supported by the Orthoptic Department, Optometrist, and Low Vision Refraction Service. There is also a Low Vision Nurse Service.

We have developed many sub-speciality clinics, including:

Comprehensive Paediatric Ophthalmology Service

  • Assessment of visual development

  • Cycloplegic refraction for glasses, if medically required

  • Orthoptic assessment for squint

  • Treatment for allergic and infected eye disease

  • The management of eyelid cysts

  • Screening for retinopathy of prematurity

We also have Sub-Specialist services for:

  • Front of the eye

  • Corneal problems

  • Glaucoma

  • Cataract

  • Vitreous and Retinal problems

  • Diabetes

  • Macular Degeneration

  • Eye Position and Movement Disorders (Squints)

  • Non Surgical and Surgical Treatment

Comprehensive Oculoplastic, Lacrimal and Orbit/Socket Service

This provides care for patients with problems around the eye, including:

  • Eye Plastic problems: Drooping eyelids, Out-turning and In-turning eyelids

  • Eyelid tumours

  • Minor Operations list weekly

  • Botulinum Toxin Clinic for blepharospasm every 6 weeks

  • Watery eyes, lacrimal / tear duct problems

  • Nurse led epilation clinic weekly

  • Eye socket problems: tumours, thyroid eye disease, fractures

  • Artificial Eye Service clinic weekly

The department is well equipped with the latest technology, allowing us to deliver consultations and operations at the highest possible standard.
