Pathology

Blood tests

The phlebotomy appointment desk is open from 8:00am to 4:45pm every weekday.

Please phone the appointment desk on 01782 555 506 to identify a timeslot for you to have your blood taken at a GP or health centre closer to home.

Sometimes there is a significant wait to be seen, so it is helpful if you are able to be flexible about when and where you can attend.

Facilities in the department

The Pathology waiting area has access to basic refreshments in the form of chilled drinking water and a hot drinks vending machine.

The Central Outpatients department is next door and has a newsagents selling drinks and confectionary and a WRVS cafe which provides hot and cold drinks and a range of hot and cold snacks.

Public toilets can be found both in the pathology and outpatient buildings.

Car parking and directions

The central pathology laboratory is a large 3 storey building adjacent to the Central Outpatients department on Thornburrow Road in Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent.

If you are travelling by road the Central Pathology Laboratory is clearly signposted from the A34 and also from the A52 (Hartshill Road). For those using internet maps, route-finders or satellite navigation our post code is ST4 7PX. We are about three quarters of a mile from central Newcastle and the same distance from the Stoke-on-Trent turning off the A500.

The main parking area for Pathology is immediately opposite the building.  The parking area is up a raised ramp and requires you to come down a flight of steps once you have parked.  Do not park here if you or a member of your party uses a wheelchair or has difficulty walking. There is further parking adjacent to Pathology and Outpatients which is on the same level.

Both these areas are pay and display but there is some drop off parking immediately outside the Pathology building. If you have any difficulties or concerns please approach the parking attendants.  They will do their best to help you and direct you to alternate parking.

About Pathology

The Pathology service in Hartshill analyses samples ranging from blood and body fluids to surgically removed tissue and foodstuffs.

These samples are generated from UHNS, other local hospitals and over 90 GP practices across North Staffordshire. All of this is done in a controlled environment and kept separate from public and patient areas.

The Pathology team consists of nearly 300 staff. All staff receive training in infection control and this is a key aspect of our phlebotomy (blood sampling) training schemes.

Patients attend the Pathology Laboratory for a variety of reasons. Sometimes this is to attend a clinic - either here or elsewhere on the Hospital site - where a blood is required test first (if you have a follow on appointment please let our reception desk know).
