Pharmacy Dispensaries

There are two dispensaries (one located at the Royal Infirmary site and one at the City General site).  They provide services to inpatients and outpatients from every clinical area in the Trust and both dispensaries are open to patients between the hours of 9.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday. The City General Dispensary is also open on Saturdays and Sundays between 9am and 1pm.

Medicines and coming into hospital

It is really important that if you are coming into hospital and take medication at home, that you bring it with you when you are admitted. This includes all prescribed tablets, any inhalers, eye drops or creams together with a summary of your current prescribed medicines from your GP (if possible). If you have any medicines that may have been purchased from a community pharmacy or health food shop, you should also bring these with you.

Bringing your medicines with you helps the doctors and pharmacists to ensure that all the doses and treatments are kept the same. This also helps the staff to explain what the medicines are and what they are used for, and also helps when a particular medicine may have been discontinued.

If you bring your own medicines into hospital there Patients Own Drugs lockers on every ward. These are used to ensure that any medication brought into hospital by is kept safe and secure. Other medicines may be prescribed whilst you are in hospital and the pharmacy can provide information on how they should be taken, their side effects and answer any questions that you may have.

All medicines are returned to patients when they are ready for discharge from hospital (if required) and the pharmacy team also replenishes any supply of prescribed medicines if there is less than 14 days treatment left.
