Organ donation at University Hospital

2010/2011 was a very busy year for organ donation at University Hospital with an increase in the number of patients referred to the Specialist Nurses for Organ Donation. However, on the flip side of this there were more families who declined donation compared to the previous year. Obviously this is something that we need to look at closely in terms of why families decline donation, however it is very personal and we must respect the decision that families make and support them in that decision.

During 2010/2011 University Hospital successfully facilitated 16 organ donations. Organs from these 16 donors have been transplanted in centres across the UK and have enabled 55 people to receive whole organ transplants, transforming their quality of life and in many cases this has been life saving. None of this would have been possible without the dedicated work of all the staff at University Hospital. Please click here to find out more about organ donation and how you can register.
